Fly fishing Woods Canyon Lake, Arizona

By admin • Jul 27th, 2007 • Category: Fishing Arizona

Im very excited about my next family fishing trip this weekend to the beautiful, yet over crowded Woods Canyon Lake. Part of the excitement is due to me starting to tie my own flys this week. During this week of research I read that Woods Canyon lake received a bonus stocking of 10,000 catchable rainbows, which should assist me in landing a decent sized trout. Since I am new to fly fishing it would be really nice to land a hog. I did catch my first trout while on my recent road trip to Canada, we stayed in the Comox valley on Vancouver island and we were literally a 5 minute walk to the Puntledge river. Although I wasn’t impressed with my 5 inch trout it was still a fish none the less. Anyways back to this weekends trip to Woods Canyon, I have tied 3 out of the 6 patterns I plan to use. So far I have tied 2 wooly buggers (sz. 12), 1 wooly worm (sz. 12), 3 zug bugs (sz. 16) and I plan to tie a few Arizona peacock ladies and a few glo-bugs tonight. I did inherit a half dozen price nymphs that I plan on using as well. Im really enjoying fly tying and I think the rewards of landing a big rainbow on a hand tied fly provides all the more gratitude. I’ll post an update with my results upon my return.
